Large "IPN" dining table in pearwood by designer Dirk Meylaerts.

“In general, a tabletop can be constructed using boards arranged lengthwise or widthwise. When boards are used lengthwise, the size of the tabletop is limited by the size of the tree. On the other hand, a tabletop assembled widthwise has the advantage of not being limited in length: in theory, the boards can be added indefinitely to create a very long table. To support the extra-long top of this table, I use two metal beams (available in any length). The tabletop can be fixed to the metal beams using two bolts. Two trestles form the table legs: they can be positioned at the ends of the table or closer to the center, depending on preference.” Dirk Meylaerts.

Dirk meylaerts

After a brief career as an actor/dancer, Dirk Meylaerts studies cabinetmaking at the arts and trades in Brussels before becoming a cabinetmaker/independent designer for 25 years. In 2006, he founded Lab, producing limited series of functional objects designed by contemporary artists. In 2012, he was production director at the Galeries Lafayette Foundation in Paris, working with various artists before returning to his first love of furniture creators, after having moved to the French countryside with his family during the health crisis 'Year 2020.

Dirk works mainly solid wood, focusing first on a procedural aesthetic, forms are research results on solid wood work and how to follow it in its own requirements. Sharing an ideology similar to that of Pierre Chapo and other major figures of the modernist movement, Dirk Meylaerts has a profound understanding of the work of its predecessors, thus allowing it to breathe a touch of modernity into its creations.
