AFTER A BRIEF CAREER AS AN ACTOR/DANCER, DIRK MEYLAERTS STUDIED CABINETMAKING AT ARTS ET MÉTIERS DE BRUSSELS BEFORE BECOME A INDEPENDENT CABINETMAKER/DESIGNER FOR 25 YEARS. IN 2006, HE FOUNDED D&A LAB, PRODUCING LIMITED SERIES OF FUNCTIONAL OBJECTS DESIGNED BY CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. IN 2012, HE WAS PRODUCTION DIRECTOR AT THE FOUNDATION DES GALERIES LAFAYETTE IN PARIS, WORKING WITH VARIOUS ARTISTS BEFORE RETURNING TO HIS FIRST LOVE AS A FURNITURE DESIGNER, AFTER MOVING TO THE FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE WITH HIS FAMILY DURING THE HEALTH CRISIS. DIRK WORKS MAINLY IN SOLID WOOD, FOCUSING FIRST ON A PROCEDURAL AESTHETIC, THE SHAPES ARE RESULTS OF RESEARCH ON WORKING SOLID WOOD AND HOW TO FOLLOW IT IN YOUR OWN REQUIREMENTS. SHARING AN IDEOLOGY SIMILAR TO THAT OF PIERRE CHAPO AND OTHER MAJOR FIGURES OF THE MODERNIST MOVEMENT, DIRK MEYLAERTS HAS A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORK OF HIS PREDECESSORS, THUS ALLOWING HIM TO INVEST A TOUCH OF MODERNITY INTO HIS CREATIONS.
